Mountain Homes MAGAZINE NAMED TOP IN NATION
Roanoke, Va. - The National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) named Mountain Homes magazine, Leisure Publishing's newest launch, top in the country for magazines, four-color, in its 2005 competition.
Mountain Homes Editor Norma Lugar won an additional national level award - second place for personal column/general or personalized - for "Our Time," her regular column in The Roanoker magazine.
Kurt Rheinheimer, Editor in Chief, won second place in the category of pages regularly edited/general or specialized publication.
All three national award-winners were among five first-place awards received in the Virginia Press Women's 2005 competition. They advanced to national competition and contributed to Virginia Press Women's fourth year of winning the state Sweepstakes Award for top number of high-level wins in the country (Virginia tied this year with Delaware).
The awards were announced at the NFPW's annual conference in September, held in Seattle, Washington.

Mountain Homes Editor Norma Lugar won an additional four awards including first place, Personal Columns (general publication); second place, Caption Writing; second place, Series of Articles (Home) and honorable mention, Feature Story (non-daily newspaper)
Cara Ellen Modisett, then associate editor, now editor of Blue Ridge Country magazine, received awards in writing, editing and broadcast,
including: first place, Feature Story (general publication); first place, sections/supplements edited (infrequent); first place, Radio interview; second place, Single Page Regularly Edited (Lifestyle or Entertainment); second place, Radio interview; second place, Newsletter (one-to-three color) and third place, Writing for Web (Commentary).

Leisure Publishing receives
multiple awards from Virginia Press Association and Virginia Press Women:
Senior Editor Norma V. Lugar was chosen as Communicator of Achievement 2004 by the Virginia Press Women. In that capacity, she was the state's nominee for the National Federation of Press Women's highest honor, in which selections are based on three categories: exceptional achievement in the communications field, service to National Federation of Press Women and to the community.

Lugar won in the Virginia Press Association First Place, Business
Writing; Third Place, a Feature Series. William
Alexander won 1st Place, Front Cover, The
Roanoker; Second Place, Front Cover, Blue
Ridge Country; Second Place, Design and Presentation, Blue
Ridge Country.
Norma Lugar won in the Virginia Press Women, the
Sweepstakes Award for 2004 as the state's top award
winner with 12 awards, including four first place awards
which go on to National Federation of Press Women
competition. Among the first place awards was
"Hooked, Confessions of An OxyContin Addict,"
which appeared as a two-part story in The
Roanoker.
Cara Ellen Modisett won 11 awards, including six firsts, including
the feature, "The Roanoker Goes Back to
School" and special arts and entertainment articles.
Blue Ridge Country magazine receives three awards from International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA).
Regional magazine Blue Ridge Country received three commendations at IRMA's annual conference, held in Bar Harbor, Maine, in September: a Silver Award for Column (Elizabeth Hunter's "From the Farm"); a Bronze Award for Public Issues (Jim Waite's story on mountaintop removal mining) and an Award of Merit for Department ("The Hike").

Associate Editor Cara Ellen Modisett received four awards from the National Federation of Press Women: first place, writing for web/commentary, for "Off the Clock" on www.TheRoanoker.com; second place, prepared radio report for a story on the opening of the O. Winston Link Museum; third place, nonfiction book, for "Blue Ridge Parkway Impressions"; honorable mention, radio interview, for "A Talk with Joan Baez."
